Aadhaar PAN Link Status Check: How to Check, Link & Penalty After Deadline
Aadhaar PAN link status check is the first thing every taxpayer should do right now. Both major deadlines have now passed. For most taxpayers, the final date was May 31, 2024. For a specific category of PAN holders whose PAN was issued using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID before October 1, 2024, the extended deadline was December 31, 2025.

If you have not completed the linking, your PAN is currently inoperative. This means you cannot file your ITR, claim tax refunds, or carry out transactions where quoting a PAN is mandatory. But you can still reactivate it by paying the Rs. 1,000 penalty and completing the linking process.
This guide covers the current status of Aadhaar PAN linking, how to check if your PAN is linked or inoperative, the exact steps to link and pay the penalty, consequences of an inoperative PAN, and who is exempt from this requirement.
Why Is Aadhaar PAN Linking Mandatory?
Under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, every individual who was allotted a PAN on or before July 1, 2017, and is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, must link the two. The requirement was introduced to eliminate duplicate PANs, prevent identity fraud, and improve financial tracking across income tax, banking, and investment systems.
From April 1, 2026, all new PAN applications automatically carry Aadhaar linkage since Aadhaar is now a mandatory field for all fresh PAN applications. This means the linking gap is a legacy issue affecting PAN holders who received their PAN before the rule came into full effect.
Deadline Summary: What Has Already Passed
| Category | Deadline | Inoperative From |
|---|---|---|
| General PAN holders | May 31, 2024 | July 1, 2023 (earlier enforcement) |
| PAN issued via Aadhaar Enrolment ID (before Oct 1, 2024) | December 31, 2025 | January 1, 2026 |
| New PANs applied from April 1, 2026 | Auto-linked at issuance | Not applicable |
Both deadlines have now passed. If your PAN is not linked, it is currently inoperative regardless of which category you fall under.
How to Check Aadhaar PAN Linking Status
You can check whether your PAN is already linked with Aadhaar without logging in to the income tax portal.
Method 1: Income Tax Portal (No Login Required)
Step 1: Visit https://www.incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Under “Quick Links” on the homepage, click “Link Aadhaar Status.”
Step 3: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click “View Link Aadhaar Status.”
The portal will show one of three results:
- “Your PAN is linked with Aadhaar” – no action needed
- “Your linking request is pending with UIDAI” – linking is in process
- “PAN is not linked with Aadhaar” – you need to complete the process
Method 2: SMS
Send an SMS in this format to 567678 or 56161:
UIDPAN (space) (12-digit Aadhaar number) (space) (10-digit PAN)
Example: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234F
You will receive a reply indicating whether the PAN and Aadhaar are linked.
How to Link Aadhaar with PAN After the Deadline
Since both deadlines have passed, you must pay the Rs. 1,000 penalty before submitting the linking request. The penalty payment must be completed first; the linking request will not be accepted without it.
Step 1: Pay the Rs. 1,000 Penalty
- Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal
- Select “e-Pay Tax” under Quick Links
- Enter your PAN, confirm PAN, enter your mobile number, and click Continue
- Enter the OTP received on your mobile number
- Click “Proceed” under the Income Tax tab
- Select Tax Year as 2026-27
- Under “Type of Payment (Minor Head),” select “Other Receipts (500)”
- Select “Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar”
- The penalty amount of Rs. 1,000 will be pre-filled
- Complete payment via net banking, debit card, NEFT/RTGS, or payment gateway
Step 2: Submit the Linking Request
After payment is confirmed (allow a few hours for the payment to reflect):
- Go to the Income Tax portal homepage
- Click “Link Aadhaar” under Quick Links (no login required)
- Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and your name exactly as it appears on Aadhaar
- Click Validate
- Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number
- Submit the request
Step 3: Wait for Reactivation
Once the linking request is submitted successfully, PAN reactivation takes up to 30 days. During this period, avoid initiating high-value financial transactions or filing ITR, as your PAN will still show as inoperative until the process completes.
Consequences of an Inoperative PAN
If your PAN is currently inoperative, here is what gets affected immediately:
ITR filing blocked. You cannot file your income tax return with an inoperative PAN. For the July 2026 ITR deadline, your PAN must be operative before you file. My guide on how to file ITR online covers the full filing process once your PAN is active.
Tax refunds not processed. Any refund due on your filed return will not be credited until your PAN becomes operative again. If you are expecting a refund this ITR season, track it via my guide on ITR refund status check.
Higher TDS and TCS deducted. Under Section 206AA of the Income Tax Act, if your PAN is inoperative, TDS will be deducted at double the applicable rate or 20%, whichever is higher. Under Section 206CC, TCS is also collected at higher rates. This means your employer, bank, or any other deductor will deduct significantly more tax than your actual liability. My guide on TDS on salary explains how TDS deduction works under normal conditions.
No interest on refunds. Even if a refund is due, the Income Tax Department will not pay any interest on the refund amount for the period during which your PAN was inoperative.
Form 15G and 15H not accepted. If you were planning to submit Form 15G or 15H to avoid TDS on FD interest or other income, these forms will not be accepted with an inoperative PAN.
Banking and investment restrictions. Mutual fund platforms, stockbrokers, and banks may restrict transactions including new investments, SIPs, redemptions, and account opening if your PAN is inoperative or KYC is flagged due to it.
New demat or bank account cannot be opened. Any financial account that requires PAN at the time of opening will be rejected until your PAN is reactivated.
Name Mismatch Between PAN and Aadhaar
One of the most common reasons linking requests fail is a name mismatch between the PAN database and the Aadhaar database. Minor variations such as initials vs full name, or spelling differences, can cause rejection.
How to fix it:
If the name on Aadhaar is incorrect, update it through UIDAI’s official portal or at an Aadhaar enrolment centre with supporting documents (birth certificate, passport, etc.).
If the name on PAN is incorrect, submit a PAN correction request through Protean eGov (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL with identity and address proof.
Once both documents carry the same name, the linking request can be submitted again. Until the mismatch is resolved, the linking request will keep failing even if the penalty has been paid.
Who Is Exempt from Aadhaar PAN Linking?
Certain categories of individuals are not required to link PAN with Aadhaar under Section 139AA. Their PAN will not become inoperative even if the deadline has passed.
The four exempt categories are:
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who do not hold an Aadhaar number (NRI status must be correctly updated on the income tax portal with supporting documents)
- Individuals aged 80 years or above (super senior citizens) at any time during the previous financial year
- Residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu and Kashmir
- Foreign nationals and non-citizens of India (including OCI and PIO cardholders)
Important note for NRIs: The exemption applies only if your NRI status is correctly updated on the income tax portal. If the portal still shows your status as “Resident,” your PAN may be marked inoperative even if you qualify for the exemption. In that case, submit your passport and supporting documents to your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO) to update the residency status. This process can take up to 30 days.
Important note for minors: Minors holding a PAN are not required to link Aadhaar until they turn 18. Once they become adults, the linking becomes mandatory.
Aadhaar PAN Linking and ITR Filing Season 2026
The ITR filing deadline for salaried professionals and most individuals for FY 2025-26 is July 31, 2026. If your PAN is currently inoperative, you need to complete the penalty payment and linking request well before July to ensure your PAN is reactivated before the filing window.
Given that reactivation can take up to 30 days after linking, the practical deadline to initiate the process if you want to file on time is late June 2026. Waiting until the last week of July leaves no buffer for processing delays.
For freelancers and self-employed professionals with multiple income sources, the consequences of filing with an inoperative PAN are more severe since their income may not go through an employer’s TDS system. My guide on income tax for freelancers covers how different income heads are reported.
Conclusion
Both Aadhaar PAN linking deadlines have passed. If your PAN is currently inoperative, the path forward is clear: pay the Rs. 1,000 penalty under Section 234H through e-Pay Tax on the income tax portal, submit the linking request, and wait up to 30 days for your PAN to become operative again.
For ITR Filing Season 2026, this means acting now rather than waiting. An inoperative PAN on July 31 blocks your ITR, stops your refund, and leaves you paying higher TDS on every future deduction until the issue is resolved.
If you fall under any of the four exempt categories (NRI without Aadhaar, super senior citizen above 80, resident of Assam, Meghalaya, or J&K, or foreign national), your PAN is not at risk of becoming inoperative, but you should confirm your status is correctly reflected on the income tax portal.
Frequently Asked Questions
My PAN is inoperative. Can I still file my ITR? No. ITR filing requires an operative PAN. Complete the penalty payment and linking process first, wait for reactivation (up to 30 days), and then file your return.
I paid the Rs. 1,000 penalty. How long before my PAN becomes active? After the penalty is paid and the linking request is submitted successfully, PAN reactivation takes up to 30 days. You can check the status on the income tax portal under “Link Aadhaar Status.”
Do I need to pay the penalty every year? No. The Rs. 1,000 is a one-time penalty for late linking. Once PAN is linked with Aadhaar and marked operative, no further fee is required.
Can I link Aadhaar with PAN at a bank branch? No. Aadhaar PAN linking is done only through the income tax portal (online), via SMS, or at a PAN service centre (Protean eGov or UTIITSL). Banks do not process this linking.
My employer is deducting TDS at 20% because my PAN is inoperative. Will I get a refund? Yes. Once you file your ITR after reactivating your PAN, the excess TDS deducted will be refunded after the return is processed, provided your actual tax liability is lower. Keep Form 26AS (now Form 168) handy to verify the TDS credit.
I linked my PAN and Aadhaar but the status still shows “not linked” on the portal. What should I do? Allow 7 to 10 working days for the UIDAI and Income Tax systems to sync. If the status does not update after that, contact the income tax helpline at 1800-103-0025 or raise a grievance on the portal.
