ITR Refund Status Check

ITR Refund Status Check: How to Track Your Income Tax Refund FY 2025-26

You filed your ITR. You verified it. Now you are waiting for your refund. But how do you know if it is being processed, stuck somewhere, or already credited without you noticing?

Every year, thousands of taxpayers either miss their refund because it went to a wrong bank account, or wait months for a refund that was actually rejected due to a technicality they could have fixed in five minutes.

This guide shows you exactly how to check your ITR refund status, what every status message means, and what to do when your refund is delayed or failed.

When Does the Refund Process Start?

The refund process starts only after two things happen: you file your ITR and you e-verify it. Filing without verification means your return is invalid and no refund is processed. If you have not verified your return yet, read the complete ITR verification guide first.

Once verified, the Income Tax Department processes your return at CPC Bangalore. For straightforward salaried returns with no discrepancies, processing typically takes 15 to 45 days. After processing, a Section 143(1) intimation is sent to your registered email. The refund is credited to your pre-validated bank account within 1 to 2 weeks after this intimation.

Filing early in April or May significantly speeds up your refund. Returns filed in April are often processed by May or June. Returns filed in the last week of July join a queue of crores of simultaneous filings and processing can take until September or October.

Method 1: Check Refund Status on Income Tax Portal (Most Accurate)

This is the most comprehensive and real-time method. It shows the complete lifecycle of your return including processing status, refund amount, and payment details.

Step 1: Go to incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN and password.

Step 2: Click on e-File in the top menu.

Step 3: Go to Income Tax Returns then View Filed Returns.

Step 4: You will see a list of all returns filed. Find Assessment Year 2026-27 (for FY 2025-26 income).

Step 5: Click View Details next to that return.

Step 6: The page shows your return status, refund amount if any, and payment details including the date refund was credited.

This method requires login. If you want to check without logging in, use Method 2.

Method 2: Check Without Login Using Acknowledgement Number

You can check basic ITR status without logging in if you have your acknowledgement number from when you filed.

Step 1: Go to incometax.gov.in.

Step 2: On the homepage, click Income Tax Return (ITR) Status without logging in.

Step 3: Enter your PAN number and acknowledgement number.

Step 4: Enter your registered mobile number and click Continue.

Step 5: Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile. OTP is valid for 15 minutes.

Step 6: Your ITR status is displayed.

Your acknowledgement number is the 15-digit number on your ITR-V which you received after filing and verifying your return.

Method 3: Check via NSDL Protean Portal

The NSDL Protean portal provides bank-level refund tracking, showing whether SBI (the authorized refund banker) has sent the payment to your bank.

Step 1: Go to tin.tin.proteantech.in/oltas/refund-status-pan.html

Step 2: Enter your PAN number.

Step 3: Select Assessment Year 2026-27.

Step 4: Enter the captcha and click Proceed.

Step 5: The page shows refund status including the date it was sent to your bank and the reference number.

Note: NSDL data updates with a delay of 10 days after the refund is issued by CPC. If the income tax portal shows refund issued but NSDL shows nothing, wait 10 days before checking NSDL again.

What Every Refund Status Message Means

The status messages on the portal can be confusing. Here is what each one actually means and what action if any is required from you.

Return Submitted and Pending for e-Verification: You filed but have not verified yet. Your return is not processed and no refund will come. Verify immediately using Aadhaar OTP or net banking. You have 30 days from filing date.

Successfully e-Verified: Verification is complete. Return is queued for processing at CPC Bangalore. No action needed. Wait for processing to complete.

Return Processing: CPC is actively processing your return. This is the normal stage after verification. Processing for simple salaried returns takes 15 to 45 days. No action needed.

Processed with Refund: Your return has been processed and a refund has been determined. The refund amount is shown. It will be credited to your pre-validated bank account within 1 to 2 weeks. No action needed unless bank account is incorrect.

Processed without Refund: Your return has been processed but no refund is due. Either your tax paid equals your tax liability, or there was an adjustment against outstanding demand. Check the Section 143(1) intimation email for details.

Refund Issued: Refund has been sent to SBI for credit to your bank account. Check your bank account. If not credited within 5 working days, check NSDL portal for bank reference number and contact your bank.

Refund Failed: Refund could not be credited. Most common reasons: bank account not pre-validated, incorrect IFSC or account number, account closed or inactive, PAN not linked to bank account. Action required immediately – see the Refund Failed section below.

Demand Determined: CPC found a discrepancy and has raised a tax demand instead of issuing refund. You need to respond to this demand. Check the Section 143(1) intimation for details of the discrepancy.

Case Transferred to Assessing Officer: Your case has been moved from CPC to your local tax officer for scrutiny assessment. This is less common and usually happens for complex returns or high-value discrepancies. Respond to any notices received.

No Records Found: Either you have not filed for this assessment year, or the return is not yet reflected in the system. If you filed recently, wait 24 to 48 hours for the system to update.

How Much Refund Should You Expect?

Your refund is the difference between tax you paid (TDS plus advance tax plus self-assessment tax) and your actual tax liability after all deductions.

Most salaried professionals get a refund when their employer deducted more TDS than required. This happens when you claimed deductions at ITR filing time that you did not declare to HR during the year.

If you are on the new tax regime and your employer calculated TDS correctly based on your regime choice, refund may be minimal or nil.

Interest on refund: If the refund amount is more than 10% of tax payable and is delayed beyond the normal processing time, you are entitled to interest at 0.5% per month under Section 244A. This interest is taxable in the year it is received.

Why Your Refund May Be Delayed

Return not verified: The most common reason. Without e-verification, processing does not start. Check your return status and verify if pending.

PAN not linked to Aadhaar: If PAN is inoperative due to non-linking with Aadhaar, refund cannot be credited. Link PAN with Aadhaar at incometax.gov.in immediately. A fee under Section 234H applies for late linking.

Bank account not pre-validated: Refund can only go to a pre-validated bank account. If you added a new bank account but did not pre-validate it on the portal, the refund will fail. Pre-validate at My Profile then Bank Account on the portal.

Discrepancy in return: If there is a mismatch between what you declared and what AIS or Form 26AS shows, CPC may hold processing for manual review. Check your email for any intimation from the department.

High volume during July-August: Crores of returns are filed in the last two weeks of July. CPC processing slows significantly during this period. Early filers get their refunds processed first.

Return selected for scrutiny: A small percentage of returns are selected for detailed assessment. If yours is selected, processing takes significantly longer. You will receive a notice under Section 143(2) if this happens.

What to Do If Refund Is Failed

If your refund status shows “Refund Failed” or “Unable to Credit Refund,” you need to submit a refund reissue request.

Step 1: Log in to incometax.gov.in.

Step 2: Go to Services then Refund Reissue.

Step 3: Select the Assessment Year for which refund failed.

Step 4: Verify your identity using Aadhaar OTP or EVC.

Step 5: Select the correct pre-validated bank account where you want the refund credited. If your bank account details were wrong, update them first at My Profile then Bank Account.

Step 6: Submit the reissue request.

Processing of the reissue request typically takes 2 to 3 weeks. You will receive a confirmation email when the reissue is initiated.

Before submitting a reissue request, ensure: your PAN is linked to Aadhaar, your bank account is pre-validated on the portal, the account is active and the IFSC is correct, and your name in the bank account matches the name on your PAN.

What to Do If Refund Is Delayed Beyond 45 Days

If your return shows “Processed with Refund” or “Refund Issued” but the money has not reached your bank account after 45 days, take these steps:

Step 1: Check NSDL portal for bank-level tracking. Note the reference number and date of dispatch to your bank.

Step 2: Contact your bank with the SBI reference number and ask them to trace the payment.

Step 3: If the bank confirms no payment was received, raise a grievance on the income tax portal. Go to e-Nivaran then Submit Grievance. Select category as Refund. Provide assessment year, acknowledgement number, and description of the issue.

Step 4: You can also contact the income tax refund helpline at refunds@incometax.gov.in or call SBI’s refund banker at 1800-425-9760 (toll free).

Refund Status for Previous Years

You can check refund status for previous assessment years as well using the same methods. On the View Filed Returns page, all assessment years are listed. Click View Details for any previous year to see its processing and refund status.

If a previous year refund is pending due to a failed bank account, you can still submit a refund reissue request for previous years as long as the return was filed and processed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does ITR refund take after e-verification?

Typically 15 to 45 days for simple salaried returns. Returns filed early in April or May are processed faster. Returns filed in the July rush may take until September or October.

My refund status shows “Processed without Refund” but I expected a refund. Why?

Check the Section 143(1) intimation sent to your registered email. The department may have adjusted your refund against an outstanding tax demand from a previous year, or there may be a discrepancy in your declared deductions. If you disagree with the adjustment, you can file a rectification request under Section 154.

Can I check refund status without logging in?

Yes. Use Method 2 described above with your PAN and acknowledgement number. Basic status is available without full login.

My bank account changed after filing. How do I update it for refund?

Log in to the portal and pre-validate your new bank account at My Profile then Bank Account. Then submit a refund reissue request if the refund has already failed, or wait for the current refund process to complete if it is still processing.

I received less refund than expected. What should I do?

Check the Section 143(1) intimation for the breakdown. If you believe the calculation is incorrect, file a rectification request under Section 154 on the portal within the time allowed. Go to e-File then Rectification Request.

Does filing ITR earlier guarantee a faster refund?

Yes, significantly. Early filers in April and May are in a much smaller queue at CPC. The July rush creates delays of weeks for late filers. Filing in April can mean your refund arrives by May or June instead of September.

What is the Section 143(1) intimation?

It is the official processing confirmation sent by CPC to your registered email after your return is processed. It shows your declared income and deductions, the department’s computation, and whether a refund is due or a demand has been raised. Always check this email when you receive it and compare with your filed return.

The Bottom Line

Tracking your ITR refund takes two minutes using the income tax portal. Check it once a week after filing rather than waiting anxiously. If the status shows any issue like refund failed or demand determined, act on it immediately rather than waiting for a notice.

The three things that ensure your refund reaches you without issues: verify your return within 30 days of filing, pre-validate your bank account on the portal before filing, and ensure PAN is linked to Aadhaar.
